Wicklow Town Fáilte Isteach Christmas Celebration

A language project where people volunteer their time to teach conversational English to migrants in their community is successfully running in Wicklow Town.  Coordinated by County Wicklow Partnership, the Fáilte Isteach Project began in Wicklow in October 2010 and is housed in CEART, home of Wicklow Travellers Group. Volunteers and students from the project held a Christmas celebration on Tuesday 13th December.  It was a true multi-cultural feast with traditional foods from Egypt, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Ireland.  Entertainment was provided by members of the Wicklow Active Retirement Association who sang, performed a sketch and told jokes.  The finale was an intercultural treat when “Silent Night” was beautifully sang in English, Irish, Polish and German.

The Fáilte Isteach project, which started in Summerhill in Co. Meath in 2006 is student-centred and delivered in a way that is welcoming, inclusive and practical in nature. All levels of English proficiency are catered for and the courses are offered free of charge.   All migrants over the age of 18 years old are welcome to attend.  The course runs in Wicklow on Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 9pm.  Classes have concluded for this year but will begin again on Tuesday January 17th 2011.

Helen Howes, co-ordinator of the Wicklow Town Fáilte Isteach said “We are very lucky in Wicklow to have such marvelous volunteers.  Their patience, reliability, ability to guide and encourage, and their commitment is highly commendable.  But it is their open and friendly manner which creates the wonderful atmosphere on Tuesday nights that makes more and more students arrive every week and makes the Wicklow project such a success.”
