Introduction

Wicklow Rural Transport was officially launched on the 31st of July 2003.  The service provides bus routes which were designed to meet the needs of people in isolated rural areas of Co. Wicklow which allow people gain access to urban facilities such as national train and bus services, large shopping centres, leisure facilities, medical and health services, etc.

Wicklow Rural Transport recorded 189,822 passenger journeys since April 2003 to the end of December 2009.

Wicklow Rural Transport’s main focus is to deliver a quality service to serve the needs of the community. WRT provides its services with the support of the Rural Transport Programme which is funded by the Department of Transport.  Other funding is secured from the Department of Social Protection (Free Travel) and from Wicklow Co. Council.

The key target groups are those with potentially the highest unmet travel needs:

  • Older people

  • Young people

  • People with disabilities

  • People on low income

  • People on home duties

Wicklow Rural Transport contracts 8 local operators for the provision of services and provides a semi-flexible door-to-door transport service where possible i.e. the service can divert off route if necessary to accommodate passengers’ needs.
